American Idol Top 24 controversy?!

Question: Do you think Carly Hennessy-Smithson (tatoos on her arms) should be allowed to stay?

She had a record deal in Irealand back in 2002. They spent $2 million trying to promote her album but it flopped. She auditioned in season 5 and didn't make it far because of her visa.

I asked a similar question based on info. that has come out about several of the potential contestants on American Idol.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

My feelings on the whole thing are if someone has had a record contract before auditioning for and becoming an actual contestant, then WE...as the people that VOTE for the eventual winner of A I - should be clued into the fact that they have had a contract/some modicum of success in the past.

I have watched A I since its inception and if I'm remembering correctly...the whole concept of the show is to take a newly discovered, yet unsculpted talent and propel them forward in the music industry - building a career from the bottom up....am I wrong about this?

I think of Carrie Underwood and the video of her talking about going to Hollywood and how shes never been on a plane before. She seemed so young and naive and fresh - what don't we know about her before she became the winner of A I?

It bothers me that Fox markets these people as new, fresh, undiscovered talent - the BEST season EVER - and here some of them are....having had record contracts, been in bands, been on TV, won Star Search competitions....or are the biggest jokes ever like Sanjaya and William Hung.....the more I think about it, the more it ticks me off that people like Sanjaya can get so far in something like this, based on millions of peoples support - because he is so awful.

I do not watch the auditions as I do not find any value in laughing at people who just want 10 seconds of TV fame and I have not yet decided if I am going to invest my time in watching this season because of all the information that is coming to light about some of the contestants.

Fox TV has acheived the top of Mt. Despicable as far as I'm concerned...

Thanks for letting me vent :)

i think she's good but she shouldn't be alllowed to stay if she already had a record deal.

Yeah she should....her album wasn't a success.

I think they should let her stay.
But honestly, maybe I need to time to adjust, but I'm really not digging the top 24 this year. I can't imagine a winner out of the group...no one really appeals to me and seems like winner material.

>>>No ,,,if she has been there done that then I would consider her a professional and there for not be allowed to sing on Idol>>.She does have a great voice,,I wonder why she flopped??? MAYBE Simon,,Randy & Paula think they can have a success with her???

she should be kicked to the curb

Well, the girl can wail!! If the record deal was in the US, then no, that wouldn't be all that fair to everyone else, howeever, if she was in Ireland, that's different. She's definitely gt some competition, though!! Good singers this year!

Yes, I do think she should be allwoed to stay, but already having an album that "flopped" is a huge CAUTION sign to the judges and directors of American Idol who would be promoting Carly if she were to win the competition.
Personally, Carly is not my favorite or one of my favorite Idols. I can not see her going too far, and I also can not see myself listening to her recorded music.

If her record deal was in Ireland, I don't really see how it relates to American Idol. She didn't have a deal here in the states. BUT I I didn't think she was that great to begin with. She has a decent voice and all but nothing about her made me think wow. Was her album released here in the states? I do agree with many others that this isn't the best top 24 people. This will be another disappointing season- so sad. Honestly, I think people are getting tired of the American Idol craze. Few more yrs and it'll be done for good.

She's talented, but if she's allowed to stay, I've really misunderstood the American Idol eligibility qualifications for the past 6 seasons. Apparently, she's not the only person who has "industry" experience. Check it out:

Among the suspicious singers in the Idol season 7 running are Carly Smithson, who was once signed to MCA Records under the name Carly Hennessy; Michael Johns, who used to front the major-label rock band the Rising under the name Michael Lee; onetime Star Search winner David Archuleta; former Boys N Girlz United boyband singer (and Britney Spears's ex-boyfriend!) Robbie Carrico; Cheyenne cast member Jason Castro; Making The Band also-ran Jason Yeager; former Arista Nashville signing Kristy Lee Cook; and Mo'Nique's Fat Chance plus-size beauty pageant winner Joanne Borgella.

Personally, I always thought of American Idol as a search for undiscovered talent. I especially loved David Archuleta, Michael Johns, and Carly- and now hearing that they've all had experience in the industry makes them seem less appealing and genuine!

American Idol came out and said she can compete because she doesn't actively have a management/manager and label. They also said she only sold a couple hundred of albums back in 2002. I went on ebay and you can get her first single for like 99 cents.

I like her a lot, but no, I don't think she should be able to stay. She's already had her shot and I think someone else should get a chance.

she should be able to stay.
i mean, that was like 6 years ago and it was like ireland.

and im not a fan of her either, but i still think she should be able to stay.

Do I think it's right? I'm not sure, but it sounds like she's not the only one with professional experience. (Interesting info, Victoria)

Should she be allowed to stay? I would say yes because she obviously meets the AI requirements. With that said, I feel AI might have modified the requirements to ensure some excellent talent this season after two lackluster seasons/winners.
