I don't know the precise dates, but my vote is for when theyears they had Dana Carvy, Phil Hartman, John Lovitz, Kevin Nealon and Jan Hooks on. Those were the best! Especially when they added Mike Myers and Chris Farley.

There were some good ones, but I'd still have to go with the original first 4 years of SNL ('75/'76 through '78/'79), before Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi left. So many memorable skits and characters from that era.

After that, I'd say 2nd place belongs to the '86/'87 through the '89/'90 seasons, which introduced us to Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey, Victoria Jackson, Dennis Miller (best Weekend Update anchor ever), then Mike Myers and Chris Farley. (Jon Lovitz was in one year before but hit his stride here.)

3rd Place belongs to the '81/'82 through '84/'85 group, which gave us Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, Martin Short and Jim Belushi when they were still funny, Mary Gross, Tim Kazurinsky (one of the top 5 underrated SNL cast members.) And all this is before even talking about Eddie Murphy.
