Tonight show, Lenno, Letterman - how in the world?!

Question: How in the world do they in the promos in the morning of what transpires that night when they are promoting their guests? I know how they can do it on re-runs, but how do they do it on the same day of live shows?

They don't tape every day. For example, I'm in love with Craig Ferguson, and they do more than one show on some days. If they tape a show on Wednesday, and it's to air on Friday, they already have the footage for the promos.

You know how sometimes they talk about how bad the audience was on the previous show, and it gets a few laughs? That's because it's usually the same audience.

The magic of editing footage of previous visits by those guests to look current?

In most cases, they use previous footage of guests.

However, on occasion you'll see footage of that night's episode, for example, on a news promo or something similar. This is done because late-night talk shows are not shot live, they are shot in the afternoon, and clips are occasionally rushed on air.

Sometimes, during the monologue, they joke about something that happened that day, without actually telling you what the result was. For instance, if last night were Monday, and not Sunday, they wouldn't be able to joke about the Grammy's, because they would be filmed before the Grammy's were.)

They know at least a year ahead of time who is booked on the shows and they film promos. It has to be planned this far ahead because of guests' schedules.
And they have a list of people they can call in case anyone cancels.

they film stuff i just got 2 points
