I agree with EM about the weight loss....I just dont understand some of the people crying after a couple days saying how hard it is, etc. They supposedly have watched this show for years and they dont realize how difficult it is?

Looks real to me at least the weight loss & hair falling out is real
It's real in that they are actually out on the island and braving the elements (to some degree; it's not like they'd let someone die out there or something.) It's fake in that the people know it's a game; they act and react very differently than they would if there weren't cameras on them. It's also fake in that the producers really pick and choose what they want to show the audience. They highlight the drama and downplay the more mundane stuff that wouldn't be as interesting to watch.
