Among other things, she was a soldier in Iraq. She was captured, held prisoner, tortured and raped. There was an episode where she showed LJ some of the scars on her legs from the torture. While they haven't said it, the implication is that she was driven insane by this, although she does seem to feel some sympathy for LJ.
