In some season 2 episodes of the Xfiles, why did Mulder put that X in his window!

Question: i keep watching these episodes, and it's usually when he thinks someone is out to kill him, he'll make an X out of masking tape and put it in his window, and shine his light on it. Why does he do this?

It's how he lets his inside source (either Mr. X--the black dude or "deep throat" the older white dude--don't know what season you're in but probably Mr. X) know he needs to ask him something.

Those episodes ran short; they had David Duchovny do that to fill time. It doesn't mean anything.

That's how he let Cancer Man know he wanted or needed to talk. (The cigarette-smoking man).

He does that, if he needs to ask some questions to his contact, Deep Throat.
