Because of the Writers strike, like many other shows, they had to stop the season half way through. In the case of Heroes they were able to make a semi-finale. They were able to make of sort of ending to keep people happy. They are just going to make it so that this season is in two parts, or if the writers strike continues they will probably just start with a whole new season where the left off.
