Indie music tends to suit indie movies. If this is about compiling a soundtrack for an indie picture, then look to artists like Rie Sinclair (she has done alot of music for ABC network), Tegan & Sara, Damien Rice, India Arie, Sia, Jonathan Cale, etc. I find the best music playing in the background of TV shows like Bones, Grey's Anatomy, and believe it or not...(don't hate me for this) soap operas. Another good source for music that might fit into a comedy is the band BareNaked Ladies. Alanis Morissette is also a good source. Is it a romantic comedy, slapstick, dark comedy....? It all really depends on the script, the pace of the movie and the mood you want to set. That's about the best I can do without knowing the story.
