Glad to hear you are a new fan! It is over...for now! It has NOT been cancelled, but production has been shut down because of the writers strike. The last episode that aired (the one with Bailey's baby being injured) was written as a cliff-hanger, in case no new episodes are written. If that is the case, then that was the season finale. If the strike is resolved, the season will pick up there! I miss it already!
Since you are new to the show, you should rent or buy the previous seasons on DVD and watch it from the beginning. I think it would be interesting for you to see how it all began!
No the strike just put it on hiatus.
There's a writers' strike on. No new shows until after that's resolved, new shows are written and then produced.
