i don't think that they need to do it to make them funny, but i think that it can definitely amplify their funniness.
I personally think they use profanity to make their point all the more aggressive thus humerus. Take the comedian "Lewis Black" for example, he uses that method to get across to the audience his strong political views. If he speaks with few or little profanity, then the audience would find him too subtle and not as interesting. Many comedians use profanity to get a rise out of the audience. And I hate to say it. But it works.
A perfectly-timed %$#@! can make something truly hilarious.
Some overdo it a bit, though. There's a difference between comedy and that &%$#*in' hippety-hoppity-rappy crap.
Well in my opinion humans are in tune with there natural instincts and if we like it or not that nearly is always sex and anything that is taboo, but we have been conditioned to repress them and when we here it in the open like stand up comics our natural reaction is to find it funny if the mass did not laugh at such humer then they wouldn't do it, and comics would not exsist.
if done right it helps, but can get annoying if they repeatedly do it
