Question: Last I saw of him was last year, the season ended with him getting shot. I saw the season premier where they spoke of his condition being OK but guarded. That was the last I heard of him. He was the younger big guy at the front desk who worked with Frank who is the old cranky guy.

i think they just wrote him off the show.. at least he didn't get killed.
The actor that played him is now on Men in trees.
This is actually like the second time that the actor left to do other things. He came back before, but I'm not sure if he will this time.
As for the character, well, since the last time they mentioned him on-air I don't think they've said anything. So I guess we are left to wonder his condition, until they decide to bring it up themselves.
Personally, I'm going with he is still recovering, and will not be able to return to work, but may 'visit'.
