Doctor Who has the better storylines,acting, special effects & the monsters !! And the gorgeous Billie Piper lol.
Since Doctor Who and Torchwood are so closely connected, this isn't really a fair question to ask. Especially since Captain Jack's story continues through both series, and they both have the same production team. There are plot points in Torchwood that you just wouldn't get, if you hadn't watched Doctor Who as well. Let's face it, without Doctor Who there would have been no Torchwood.
Doctor Who has been my favourite TV programme since 1963. It's coming up to it's 30th series and has it's own canon and history to fall back on. The last series had some of the best writing, story telling, acting and production seen on TV.
We've only seen 15 episodes of Torchwood so far, so it is a relatively very new series, which still largely depends on the history and popularity of Doctor Who to guarantee it's audience. It would be interesting to know how many people watch Torchwood, but not Doctor Who. Very few I would think. The last series of Torchwood was a bit patchy to say the least. It included some very good episodes, but also some very poor ones.
So if you really have to compare the parent series to it's spin-off, it has to be said that Doctor Who is much better than Torchwood as things stand at the moment. The first two episodes of the current Torchwood series have been very promising indeed, however.
I think that the Doctor Who / Torchwood production team are beginning to find their feet with the spin-off, and I'm hoping that the kind of top quality drama we saw in the last series of Doctor Who is rubbing off on Torchwood. Hopefully during the current series, Torchwood will now become a great series in it's own right. Who knows, given enough time it might even become as iconic as Doctor Who.
I think the previous poster said it all. It depends a lot on what you are looking for.
That a hard question i love them both i love captain Jack in Torchwood but if i had to chose i think i would pick Doctor Who
