no movie that ever heard of. I vaguely remember a movie in the 70's about a rock band, where the singer was told to leave his band mates for a solo career. He was successful, but regretted his decision, and later died by OD. I think the movie was called Stardust, but I think South Park was based on general rock band stories.
Its based around the popularity of the Guitar Hero games, I don't know about it being based on a movie, but I doubt it.

Edit: yea its not based on a movie. It might seem like one but i think the point of it was to make it look like the people who play guitar hero are losers (coz at the end when stan and kyle get a million points the game is like 'congratulations you are..... f*gs!'
