On now, Film4. A couple of prisoners did the same thing only recently in America, and escaped down the sewer..
I don't believe it's based on a *true* story but rather a fictional story by Stephen King, "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption". Here's a link with more info on the book:

Best film ever made, bar none
How old are you if you seeing it for the first time?
Great film I am moved by it every time i see it.
its in my top 5 all time faves, its a slow burner but totally engrossing.
lost count how many times ive seen it. best movie ive ever seen.
I think it's a brilliant movie.
I have a pen pal in jail who's always asking me to send him a rock hammer. I sometimes wonder if there's a connection with the movie. Maybe he has seen it.
The movie was excellent, but the book was better. I prefer my own imagination to Hollywood's.
Just watched it. Was going to do a post myself......brilliant.
absolutely brilliant film Tats, joint best film ever for me, that and The Green Mile!
Great film and very sad too
i watched it a few years back but my b/f has not so i got it him for xmas as i am hazy about a few parts and i really wanted to watch it again myself!!! i did not know it was based on a true story. i too would reccomend it to everyone. a brilliant film.
p.s. bravo on your troll catching. the little twat reported my answer for that Q also. i think you did not leave your warning up long enough though as i only came across it just now.

seen it ,shame I dont remember a think about it now, mind you I don't remember what I had for lunch yesterday, but remember where you work and I was invited before xmas!!!! funny how we remember what we want to remember hey.
Only saw this film about 18 moths ago, but watch it every time it`s on TV and even have it on DVD. Brilliant.
Loved it! Also my 20 year old daughters favourite film so appeals to different ages.
Yeah Ive seen it loads of times tatty....and as you say a real tear jerker.......oh I forgot..Super Heroes dont cry....must have been peeling onions at the time...lol
I'II have to remember that one then Tatty I love a good dvd, thanks hun.x
i havent seen it but ill keep my eyes open!!!!!!!!! i love Ghost & Titanic,,.,.,. xxxxxxxxx
TSSR is one hell of a great film, I totally agree.
Originally it was a novella by Stephen King - Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.
Made in 1994 and directed by Frank Darabont it tells the story of wrongly convicted Andy Dufrense,(Tim Robbins) a city financier.
In the film he meets with 'Red' ( Morgan Freeman) a man who gets things.
I wont spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen the film, but its most endearing quality is that it encompasses hopes, dreams and friendships. Things we all want and desire.
The poster is replaced with one of Raquel Welch in the film, dont exactly know why?
But its tag line (one of them ) rings true for all of us....
'Fear can hold you prisoner, Hope can set you free!'
ps Why didn't this film win a bundle of Oscars?
pps This film practically bombed at the cinema, and only became a hit once released on video. ( No DVDs in those days kids) lol
ppps The other famous tag line is ' Get busy living, or get busy dying '
I haven't seen it,Tatty but I hear it mentioned many times on film discussions on late night radio so I shall have to see it I suppose.
One good thing - I have blocked the second of the trolls doobie mentioned (I got the first one from your question) so who knows? - every little helps!
Its a great movie, amazing performances from Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, it does not matter whether it is a true story or not.
When it was released in 1994 it was considered a box office failure, though it was nominated for 7 Oscars. However by 2001 it came in at number 3 in a public vote on Channel 4 for the best film ever.
Shawshank and The Green mile were both by Stephen King and I think it was actually Green Mile that was based on the truth and recently some prisoners used the Shawshank Redemption's idea for their escape!
I prefer the Books but both the Films are really good and whenever I watch either it's a case of "Pass the tissues PLEASE!"
I saw this years ago, so I have it on video, love it, watched it loads and loads, fantastic film. Was going to leave a link to a nasty troll saying as they are rife today, but looks as though hes been taken off thankfully
Yea Ive seen it a bunch of times
Great movie based on a fictional book ..i enjoy it every time i watch it
and it was one of the first dvds i bought
