First, writers don't get paid that kind of money, at least the majority don't, just like most actors don't make crazy money. What they're striking for is residuals. When you buy a DVD, it generally costs around $20. The writer gets paid four cents of that money. This amount was set back in 1988 and has remained unchanged for 20 years. The guild wants the amount per DVD to be raised to eight cents. The studios say that's too much money. Also at issue are internet downloads. When you download a movie via iTunes, Amazon Unboxed etc, the producer, director, actors and studio get paid. The writer does not get paid. The guild believes that the writer should get paid for this.

As for hiring new writers, that's a huge can of worms. Anyone who crosses the picket line is considered a scab. Once the strike is over, nobody will employ a scab. Also, the directors and actors are unionized and would probably refuse to work with scabs. There's also the fact that scabs are likely to be writers with no experience (since experienced writers know better) and very little talent. They aren't the best solution.

they are striking because they are not getting paid for like dvd purchases and stuff like that. And yes, they can hire more writers but then those writers would be labeled as scabs ... perhaps you should do a little research on the writers strike and unions in general.

Dude, seriously, you need to do some more research on this subject. The average writer's income is only $5000 a year. I sure as heck couldn't live off that. No one can.
Any writer, w/o permission from the union, would be in violation of the writer's guild union and would be a 'scab'.
They deserve every single thing they are asking for. You should be mad at the studios for not realizing how important the writers are and not giving in right away to their very reasonable demands, instead of being angry with the writers.

It has nothing to do with money, It has to do with getting the respect they deserve!

One of the main issues is that they don't get paid when a show they wrote is offered online for download. They want (and I wholeheartedly believe they deserve) a chuck of that change.

I believe the networks are holding back because either later this year or next the actors guild's contract is up, and they are going to ask for the same thing that the writers are asking for - part of the profits from online sales. So the networks are fighting this.

Most strikes are about the future of earnings. This strike is on because the networks and production companies are getting paid for selling TV shows on DVD, and the writers are not getting their share of the money. Also, the networks are getting paid for showing episodes online, and again, the writers aren't getting a share of that, either.

I support the writers because they are entitled to a share of the profits from their work. Even the Bible says that a worker is due his wage.

Without the writers there would be no TV, movies, etc. Someone has to come up with the concept and then the actual shows. I wish the Networks would just give the writers what they deserve so we can all get on with our shows!!
