As a result of the writer's strike, the show couldn't proceed as planned. There would be no writers to write the show. As a result, the winners were announced press conference style.
The writers strike is what happened to it.
because of the writers strike and the actors supporting it they didn't have any big ceremony- just a Press conference type thing
NBC cancelled the ceremony because they heard that a lot of the celebs weren't going to attend- they said they would not cross the picket lines (to show support for the writers guild). So, instead NBC aired an hour-long telecast that featured entertainment reporters just reading the winners and commenting. It was super cheesy, and Billy Bush was the worst!!
