Can someone explain Terminator TV show on Fox?!

Question: I never seen any of the movies - I just watching this new episode didn't see the first one...why are they jumping all over the past and future? Is John (the young boy) trying to kill everyone now? Why is the show name after his mom instead of him? What is the point of the young girl who is helping them - and is John grow up to be the Arnold Schwargenner character? TY.

Well...

In the first Terminator movie is set in the 80s, 1984, which is about Sarah Connor. In the future, an artificial intelligence known as Skynet created by the military, has become self-aware, and launched a genocidal war against humanity. Humanity was about to become extinct when a man named John Connor showed up, rallied the humans together, and fought back against Skynet.

As Skynet saw defeat as imminent, it sent one of its machines, a terminator, back to kill Sarah Connor, John Connor's mother, to stop John from ever being born. However, John Connor learned of this, and sent his own soldier back, Kyle Reese. In a twist of events, Kyle Reese would impregnate Sarah Connor, and is thus actually, John Connor's father.

In another twist, Kyle Reese would destroy the terminator sent back by Skynet to kill Sarah Connor, and it would later be found by people working for a company called Cyberdyne, who would use the remains (specifically the CPU) to go on to create Skynet.

It starts after the second movie, it would help to see one and two. They are trying to save the planet from robots that take over in like 2011.

You can read some of the history at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminator_... but you really should watch Terminator and Terminator 2 to get it better. They're great movies.
