Ten-year-old Kayla Woodhouse suffers from a rare condition where she feels no pain. The condition was diagnosed when Kayla was only 14 months old and passed out on the playground.
Kayla’s condition is called Hereditary Sensory Autonomic Neuropathy, and it so rare that there are only twenty-five people in the world diagnosed with the condition. The condition means that Kayla has lower sensitivity to pain and temperature. Her cooling functions like sweating don’t start until her body reaches a lethal high temperature, and pain isn’t felt until it’s 20 to 30 times the normal intensity.
Because of her condition, Kayla can only go outside to play after sundown. In hopes of lessening health risks for their daughter, the Woodhouse family moved from Louisiana to Alaska.
