Basically, the studio execs promised the writers a certain percentage of profits from video sales. But back when VHS was taking off, they asked if they could just give the writers half their percentage, until the medium became popular. Well, now we're watching DVDs and streaming video and they've never seen their full cut! And the invention of iTunes and hulu and all that , now people aren't really buying DVDs as much so the writers are getting screwed out of a lot of money!

they want to be paid when their work is downloaded and dvd sales and things like that they want their piece of the pie

It's simply economics: the writers want a fair share for the iTunes and global internet sales of the shows they have writen for as well as 4 cents for every DVD copy that's sold. The network's Big Cheeses are recluntant to this demands and hence the industry and us fans suffer cause the shows are closing seasons very quickly (there are no more written scripts for new episodes left) and the award season started yesterday with a very boring To Do List reading of nominees and winners of the Golden Globes.

That's the deal!

There's a short video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ55Ir2jC... that explains the issues very clearly.
