Why is the Jay Leno, Conan O'Brian, and Colbert Report shows on if the write!

Question: I thought the writer strike was over at the beginning of the year. Is it still going on? How are all the late night shows back on then?

A lot of the shows were threatened to go back on air. The studios pretty much said you go back or else we'll fire everyone associated with the show. It puts them in a hard place because they want to support their writers who deserve what they're asking for, but in the same sense they don't want a lot of people to lose their jobs because of this.

Letterman negotiated a deal where he got his writers back for the show, but Leno, Kimmel, Conan, and the others I'm pretty sure are writing their own monologues and other skits in the shows. I saw a skit last week where after it was done, Leno said "And that's a good example as to why we need our writers back".

They're tired of sitting at home watching their beards grow (except for Jay, who apparently can't grow facial hair).

The show must go on....

Because if their shows are mostly improv, the writer's guild can't touch them.

Colbert does most of his own writing, I believe. The others, no telling. They may have worked something out with their writers or it may be in their writers contracts.

It is on. Some hosts are paying the writers, staff, from own pockets.

They made a private deal with the writers.

Some of them are being forced by the studios, others are doing it because they want to keep the other workers employed, otherwise they'd be laid off. Their shows are easier to do without script since they are a guest type shows. They are "writing" their own material.

Leno, O'Brian, and Colbert are acomplished comedians, and they are perfectly capable of writing their own material. In the case of Leno, it is even in his contract that he can write his own material if he chooses (and all his writers knew this going in to the strike).

I would imagine the same kind of language is written in to O'Brian and Colbert's contracts, also.

Letterman is paying a staff not associated with the strike. (I think he owns his own show... The rest of the Guys are doing their own tihng. writting their Own Material... I am just wondering how long it can go on before it isn't funny anymore.

Hosts are running out of money. They only have millions left in they're bank account.

They are going on without the writers.
They are writing their own material, but really relying on interviews (with those not in the guild), to take up the bulk of the time. All these guys were once writing their own stuff early in their careers, so they do have a little experience.
The strike is still going on--for who knows how long? Hopefully they'll start giving the writers what they want so I can enjoy something besides reality tv!

I think they should get Arsenio Hall back on the air. Remember him? That was before writers strikes.

They negotiated an economical fair share with the writers who are STILL on strike to do their scripts for the shows. Aparently this talents (Leno et al) are willing to pay from their wallets the amount of money the network Big Cheeses are reclutant to pay for!
