I seem to remember that guests get paid "scale", meaning union scale rates. That would be far below what an A-list star would normally command, but the real value of course is publicity for their movie or TV show or tour or whatever else.

Appearing for the publicity is the main reason they go on these talkshows - to promote whatever it is they have - a book, movie, tv show, etc. They get paid between $300-$600/per appearance. So it's just a job to them and they make it look like fun. They need the publicity more than the cash.
No, they do not get paid. Usually they are promoting some new project they are in, so it is for the publicity of that that they appear.
