Where is "Atlantis" in the Stargate timeline?!
Question: I have the first 7 seasons of "Stargate: SG-1" on DVD and am interested in checking out "Stargate: Atlantis". Thing is, I want to make sure I'm watching it all "in order". At what point does "Atlantis" begin during the "SG-1" timeline? Was it at the end of season 8? Midway? Beginning? Last episode I saw had Colonel O'Neil activating some Ancient superweapon beneath the Antarctic, then going into suspended animation. Where is "Atlantis" in all this? Please help!

Okay, so O'Neill went into suspended animation. Then in the first couple of episodes he gets back out and goes back to his normal sarcastic loving-to-fish self. Remember the blond lady in charge of the SGC? Her name's Doctor Elizabeth Weir. (Bear with me, this may be annoying but hopefully will explain everything...kinda). In the beginning of season eight she's in charge of the SGC, at the end of the episode New Order, O'Neill gets promoted and put in charge of the SGC and Dr. Weir (who now amazingly looks completely different, since they changed the actress, now she's a brunette) goes down to Antartica to be in charge of a group of international scientists that are studying the Ancient weapons platform there (the thing O'Neill was using, making all those bright lights come up and attack Anubis's sidekicks). Beginning of season eight, okay? Still following my zigzag pattern? Then Daniel Jackson (who's down in Antartica helping out all those scientists trying to find the lost city of Atlantis) finds the gate address to Atlantis, so Dr. Weir, tons of scientists, and tons of military personnel who are supposed to protect the scientists go to the SGC and use the ZPM (aka ZedPM, all depending on what character's talking) to dial Atlantis...which is in another galaxy. They leave (without Daniel Jackson, who desperately wanted to go and just about every attempt of his to travel there is thwarted) and SG-1 continues as normal. Then it's on and off (there are references in both series to what's going on on the other show), for example, Prometheus Unbound is parallel with season one of Atlantis. However the last episode of season ten (and the two SG-1 movies, Ark of Truth and Continuum) take place before Atlantis's season four.
Well, first you have to get Stargate SG1 seasons 8, 9 and 10. The Atlantis expedition begins at the same time as SG1's first episode of season 9. Daniel is on his way to Atlantis but gets sidetracked. Both Atlantis and SG1 run concurrently - the are both in the same timeline. There are many episodes of Stargate Atlantis where they go back to Earth and visit SG1 or SG1 comes to the Atlantis. Right now, during season 4 of Atlantis, Carter is the commanding officer.
"Atlantis" begins near the start of SG-1 season 8, definitely after episodes 1 and 2, but before episode 12 (this is the episode where Daniel and Prometheus are on the way to Atlantis, but get sidetracked).
"Stargate SG-1" season 8 and "Stargate Atlantis" season 1 then basically run concurrently, but the SG-1 season finale takes place before the Atlantis season finale.
SG-1 season 9 + Atlantis season 2 are concurrent, SG-1 season 10 + Atlantis season 3 are concurrent, and Atlantis season 4 continues on alone. We're all going to have to figure out where the SG-1 movies fit into the Atlantis timeline when they come out.
1st season of Atlantis , I think goes along with season 8 of sg1
Atlantis starts at the beginning of season 8 of sg1
2nd Atlantis - 9th of sg1
3rd Atlantis - 10th of sg1 and the movies
4th Atlantis- after season 10
at least they were paired like that when they showed them brand new on tv

beginning of season 8 but after the 1st few episode ( after Dr. weir leaves command of the sgc to go to Antartica)
and before the episode Daniel tries to go to Atlantis
