I answered this for somebody else so I'll just copy and paste my answer:
Season 2 ended with Jim confessing his love to Pam during the Casino Night. They kiss, and she still says she is still going through with the marriage to Roy.
When Season 3 starts, Jim has been promoted and transferred to Stamford and Pam has called off the wedding a few days before the big day.
About a quarter of the way into the season, the Stamford branch is closing and will be absorbed by the Scranton branch--bringing Jim back, along with his new girlfriend, Karen from the Stamford branch.
Toward the end of the season, there is an opening for a corporate job and Ryan (unbeknownst to any of his co-workers), Michael, Karen, Jim and others are all interviewing for this job (which they later find out is Jan's job) in the season 3 finale. During the interview, Jim finds a note that Pam left for him with a Office Olympics gold medal saying "Jim, Don't forget us when you're famous! -Pam" Then, during one of the last scenes of the episode, while Pam is talking to the camera about how Jim probably got the job, and how they never got the timing right, Jim walks in and asks Pam to dinner that night.
In the first episode of Season 4, we find out that they are dating and it's going great (really great, according to Jim). YAY! FINALLY! :-)
