"The Caretaker" - sporocystian lifeform with the ability to manipulate molecules, matter and the "threads" or "strings" of the universe, is responsible for this. He did this in an effort to find a suitable mate among the crew before he "died".
The Caretaker had done this before with other species but they were flung back to their origin of space, once they were rejected as unsuitable.
