Wouldn't it be cheaper for the networks to just give the writers a raise, th!

Question: I was thinking about this and just wanted to know.

According to the news reports I've heard, the writers are not striking for raises. As I understand it, they want a cut (or a larger cut) of the DVD sales.

I suppose that makes sense, since they make such creative contributions; but I personally feel striking is a form of extortion or holding everyone (including the viewers) for ransom.

Ok. That makes even more sense. But do they not sign contracts when they take jobs? What about the novelists whose works are made into movies? Do they get additional royalties, even years later, when their movies are released on a different medium? Doesn't that depend on their original contract with the producing studio?

My major point was that perhaps this should be negotiated in the contract-writing stage rather than after the contract is signed.

Very good question.

If the writers are that exepensive; do they really need a pay rise?

You would think so. Especially given the fact that they will eventually most likely end up having to give in to the writers demands. It would be nice if they did it now as opposed to months from now!

***EDIT****
To the person directly below me...yes, the writers want a bigger portion of the DVD sales, but also want a share of the profits that the networks get from online viewings of shows. Right now the writers do not get any compensation at all when someone views a show on the Internet, while the networks are making a huge profit from the advertisements appearing on the screen or during the show. Regardless, it still comes down to more money...basically getting a raise.

and the writers get ZERO from those downloads at network sites /Itunes but the network Sell Ads on those sites and make extra $$ from the downloads-- the writers just want 2 and 1/2 CENTS per download

hmm, well what the writers are having a problem with is that they dont really get recognized for their efforts and work. when you watch a tv show and someone says something funny or clever most of the time you think "wow that person is funny or clever" but its really not them, its the writers. the writers just want more recognition...which i belive they deserve it. they really only credit they get are their names in the credits that roll down your screne really fast and you cant even read them. I think the writers should get more recognition and a raise.
