Why did the writer's strike prevent guests from being on late-night talk sho!
Question: I can understand how the hosts' monologues might be provided by writers, so the hosts couldn't do that part of the show --- but couldn't they still chat with guests? Are the guests' comments and stories scripted rather than spontaneous? Or is it just that the guests were not willing to cross the writer's picket lines?

Well, I imagine guests want to support the writer by not going onto talk shows. I know that some big time actors actually have contracts that say they are not allowed to do monologues or play characters on tv while there's a strike.

I think i's more along the lines of not wanting to cross the picket line. Many of the GG nominated stars are not planning on attending the GG's because they don't want to cross the picket line. They are trying to show support by not appearing on the shows.
i think that the shows can't get BIG TIME guests because the shows are not as proffesional now that the writers are gone, and they want to show support! im pretty sure that the interviews are NOT scripted! LOL! but who knows, if i was BIG TIME i'de still do the show. i don't know why the BIG STARS can't but...o well! LOL! i still enjoy jay leno, conan o' brien, and carson daily...with or without the writers! LOL! HOPE THIS HELPS!

The writers and actors belong to the same union, It would go against union rules to cross the picket line.
They were supporting the striking writers. It's a no-no to cross a picket line.
Mostly out of respect for the picket lines. This is a big deal with the pro's.
