From what I have researched on several different shows. A season is approximately 26 episodes.
There was a NPR report that said that TV as we know it is gone. A season used to be from early September to mid June, and the shows had original episodes every week! That's 39 episodes a year. That was TV when I was a boy in the early 60s.
Now a season is about 24 episodes like in the FOX series, "24" Some may be 26, some as few as 16. Some shows such as "Monk" break up their season, so every few months they have 8-10 new episodes.
As the internet, cable, and "on demand" TV expand, there will be fewer and fewer traditional TV series that premier in mid September and conclude in mid June.
They normally air a season from September to May...but only 24 (ish) of those weeks have brand new episodes. There are repeats, and other random things on....got to love life in the UK - we might be behind the US on shows, but once they start over here (the big ones any like CSI and the like) we get the full season, no breaks
