I have never been on this show (Thank God) and I can't imagine I ever will be. Before I worked with the public as much as I do now (as a school administrator) I didn't believe that these people really existed. I thought that they were paid actors who were told what to say and do.
Unfortunately, having seen a lot of the rough underbelly of American rural life, I can tell you that these people do exist and that they are not even very hard to find. If I drive 20 to 30 miles from the nearest big city, there is a lot of empty farmland and every once in a while a trailer. This seems to be where these people live, "love," and do whatever else it is that they do.
Sleeping with each others' spouses and siblings? Doin' it with the babysitter while the wife is off working to pay the rent? Doing/selling drugs with their own children? I've seen it all. It's real, they are not all that ashamed of it, and I'm not surprised that they're willing to get on national (or, I guess, international) television to fight it out.
I'm HAPPY to say that they are certainly not representative of the average American. That's part of the fascination of the show. It's a sick fascination to see how low certain elements of our society have sunk. They are in the minority, but when you have almost 300,000,000 people to choose from, that minority is still a large number of people.

The Jerry Springer show is fake--there simply are not that many trailer parks in America! Seriously, I find the whole thing sad that people have to drag out such disgusting behavior just so they can be on TV. The people who are on it and who watch it don't have the sense God gave a flea. And no, they are NOT--repeat NOT--representative of Americans. The reason the show is so popular is because it and the people are so disgusting.

They are actors. Paid to be trash.
