Question: Anyone remember what year it made the big switch? And why?
I remember it used to be a respectable show like Oprah, Maury, and Montel. I remember Jerry's "final thought" about basically being a better person.
When did it change to the freak show it now is? Why? Which version do you prefer?

I remember when Jerry was a "clean" show! He didn't always have circus freaks. It was originally developed to replace the Phil Donahue show. Way back when he first started, it was a typical, respecatable talk show. I remember there was an episode about some sick little girl and I always wondered what to her. And yes, his final thought was about being a better person. Strange how it went from one extreme to the other. Springer revamped the format of the show in order to garner higher ratings.

Are you sure about that? I don't think that Jerry was EVER like Oprah. His show wasn't totally raunchy when it first came out but then it got really bad. The he tried cleaning it up a bit..less fighting, nudity, etc. but I guess he wasn't getting the ratings so it got raunchier.

Umm, I always remember it being a "freak" show, regardless or not if he had a "final thought" at the end. I don't ever recall it being anything like "Oprah", lol...
Personally, I prefer to not watch Jerry Springer. PERIOD! But I will give you a star. :)
Jerry Springer has never, I repeat never been like the Oprah show. It's actually calmed down quite a lot from 5 or so years ago.
His final thoughts are still well thought out and insightful.
I think Jerry would be insulted in being compared to Oprah. He's very intelligent (check his credentials) and he knows what sells TV viewers - the freak show. Oprah has to give away millions to garner the same viewership.
don't know when but i think it's stupid... and montel, maury are like that too now..not as big but still pretty annoying...

Never watch it any more! It's all hog wash now! He changed for better ratings! Better ratings??? Goes to show you what people like to watch! If no one liked it, it wouldn't still be on. As far as Oprah, don't watch that much any more either! Have a Great Day
I don't know if I'd quite consider Oprah respectable. Her pretension of sophistication and puffed up attitude about herself makes me ill, and her philanthropy for profit is one-of-a-kind. Her program is like a big infomercial and people don't even realize it. She may as well be Billy Mays.
Way before it got into all this.. even before the oprah type stuff, it was a political talk show..
It was respectable.
But over the years that show alone show the progress in the decline of national television.
I prefer an 'Oprah' style show.

I don't know when it wasn't a freak show. The only good thing about the show was the final thought. I don't understand how anyon can wake up watching that type of show. When I hear the siren I change the channel. As I do with Bart Simpson, South Park. (poor Issac) Blessed 2008 All
his show has ben a cicus for over 10 years and i rarely watch it any more
I DON'T REMEMBER WHEN BUT I LIKE THE SHOW WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT I LOVED IT BUT NOW I DON'T EVEN BOTHER WITH IT.... I RATHER WATCH MONTEL, DR. PHIL AND OPRAH.... THE JERRY SPRINGER SHOW IS ALL STAGED FOR RATINGS I THINK AND I WILL NOT LET MY TEENAGER WATCH THAT SHOW....
when was it not a freak show i hate his show and all of the other day time talk shows except Ellen
its always been a freak show as far back as i remember. i used to like the ricki lake and jenny jones show but those shows are long gone.
