Why did Joey from Friends character appear in Days of our lives?!

Days of our Lives has been on the air for as long as I can remember, kinda like Coronation Street. I used to watch it with my Nana when I was very young, so it's a show that most Americans would know or know of. Both Days and Friends originally air on the NBC network and when t.v. shows reference other shows, they usually stick to the same network (prolly for legal reasons). And since soaps have such crazy storylines, there was usually a joke to be had by Joey talking about his work, even though his character wasn't actually on the soap. Some Days actors even guest starred on Friends. I guess it would be like Nick on My Family getting a job on EastEnders. You wouldn't need to follow EastEnders to get jokes out of that.
In Friends, Joey was an actor. He just happened to get a job on Days of Our Lives. I don't think there is any sort of joke that goes along with it.
On Friends, Joey is an actor and had the role of Dr. Drake Demoray on Days of Our Lives. His character was shortlived on the show.
