Fagin in the BBC's new serial "Oliver Twist".....?!

Question: Why does Fagin escape in this series, when in Dickens's classic tale, Fagin was caught and hanged for his crimes?

Also, was Dickens's portayal of Fagin as the "archetypal Jewish villain" in any way anti-semitic?
