The first one was Perry McCarthy. It's reckoned the current one is Ben Collins, from Le Mans, Nascar and International GT Racing. The driving style suggests that background too.

perry mc carthy was the first stig & dressed in black, he got the sack for revealing in his autobiography that he was the stig.
ben collins took over & has been the stig ever since, although i believe some car manufacturers use their own test drivers for insurance purposes.
the accident report into richard hammond's accident revealed that collins worked as " a high speed driver & consultent " on the show.
heikki kovalainen drove the renault f1 car around the track
dan lang performed the skidoo jump.
collins also appeared on the show as himself at least 3 times
