Tila Tequila-Vietnamese?!

Question: As a fellow Vietnamese, I'm embarrssed to say she's Vietnamese. This is not how Vietnamese people like to be protrayed. I wish she can hide her identity, Her family probably disowned her because of her life style. While the rest of us try to live a normal life (with moral) this girl just gave us a bad name.

I never watched her show until I flipped the channel when she said she's serving Vietnamese food. I thought she just likes Vietnamese food. I checked her out and when I found out she is Vietnamese, I was just about to fall out of my chair. How degrading to our culture and our people.

I know this comment may seem odd to say, but I love you! I found out her last name was Nguyen and I dropped to the floor because I was so ashamed. I too am Vietnamese and I am so embarassed of her. Espically considering the fact that there are 0 to none Vietnamese people in the spotlight and we get to have her to repersent our culture.

I just don't understand how she got so popular, she is so ugly, trashy, and just disgusting.

I agree with everything you had to say. Coming from a Vietnamese family, I also bet that her family had disowned her.

She is also a total fake she was brought up in a nunnery, she acts like she is street wise when she is quite the opposite

i think she has a fuuny looking head...not to be mean, but it looks odd....

It's ok. As an American u know there are plenty of bad examples/idiots. The Spears family, the Bush family, Lindsay Lohan..........

I hear you but don't let it get to you.

I get somewhat embarrassed when a fellow African American gets portrayed in a negative light too.
People, especially those who arent around any diversity, tend to stereotype and think all (insert a minority here) act like this.

The news is the biggest offender of this. Lots of people believe that African Americans are the only people on welfare. But, in truth, there are more white people on it.

TV can be a dangerous thing sometimes when taken out of context.

I agree

Then what is the proper way to portray ones culture?

I am not Vietnamese, even if I were I would not be embarrassed. She may portray herself a certain way, but it doesn't make her what most people would assume. You don't know her personally so your opinions are just your opinions. I am not a fan of hers, but I must admit her antics has taken her quite far up that she is well known and making a career for herself. The route taken may not suit for most modest people but it's showbiz, she's not the only one that has gone through it.

I'm sorry that Tila Tequila offended you. Just hope that she reads this and sees that she is a dissappointment to your culture & she is a bad example for young girls that would rather wear pants instead of bathing suits out in public.
Read this though...

Well I am not Vietnamese but I am Asian American and from an AA standpoint, she is not the best representation of Asian Americans as well. And since there are so few Asian Americans in mainstream American media, every representation counts. All I can say to her is that she'd better use up every minute of her 15 minutes of fame and make the most money she can because right now her career is based on looks and once looks fade, Hollywood stops calling.

jarnoldf:

I said she was not the BEST representation. Obviously you are not Asian American because you don't understand that what's on TV and in movies is largely all most Americans see of Asian people. Thus they form their whole opinion about what Asian people are like based on what they see on TV. Tila Tequila is perpetuating the sterotype of the sex-crazy Asian female. Where is the positivity in this? It's re-inforcing another stereotype that mainstream America has about Asian women - that they are easy prostitutes. You say, "well what's the big deal?" The big deal is that these same people who watch Tila Tequila and similar mis-representations of Asian people are also the same people who hire us, gives loans, rent or sell property to us, whose children go to school with our children...etc. You wouldn't think it's so funny when your kid goes to school and gets called a asian wh0re or "me sucky sucky long time" because the other kids saw it was ok on TV to put down Asians. Of course you'll say, "well tough, deal with it." And I would respond, "we are by telling you we've had enough of your racism"

Don't feel bad. . . there's always someone making the others look bad.

Oh God! As a fellow vietnamese american I completely agree with the other viet folks out there! When I found out she was vietnamese I was embarassed also! and the sad fact that when I was younger around 15 one of my best friends looked up to her and dressed inappropriately and lives her lifestyle too! She's a horrible person to look up to and the way she portrays herself on T.V is outrageous! I know our community won't be happy with this at all. We're proud of what we've accomplished here in the last 30 years, we worked hard and now she's representing the vietnamese people in a negative light. Its really embarassing.

I don't care about her odd shape head. She gives our people a bad name. We crossed the ocean to get here so our children can have a better life (education) so they can take care of themselves. We don't want to be portrayed as Vietnamese women who display their body in front of million of people just for 15 minutes fame. It's not our people are about.

As a Vietnamese myself, we just can't have a Britney or Jaime Lynn Spears. Have anyone noticed that her family was never on the show?. They probably hide of embarrassment. We work too hard for what we have and we try to do it the right way. I have nieces as young as 2 years old. I certainly don't want them to grow up seeing our people in the media like this. I'm sure she broke her parents and grandparents' heart.
Vietnamese society is very conservative. They will look down on her if her lifestyle is portrayed in public for sure.

Sad to say, it's the way of the world nowadays.
Our youngsters don't have the best role models to look up to, that's why it's important that we do our part as parents, brothers/sisters, aunts/uncles and just friends to set that example for them....remember, "it takes a village to raise a child."
And although I understand why you would feel embarassed, don't take it personally. Only those who are ignorant would base an entire race on one person...

I agree with you.

I do not like the way she portrayed Vietnamese people. I, myself wish she never revealed her identity. We work too hard to maintain our culture and teach our children to live an honorable life. How embarrass for the rest of us. We. Vietnamese people don't just live for ourselves, we also live for our family and our community. It's important for us to live up with what our parents and grandparent's image. They worked too hard and sacrificed for us. We can't afford to let them down.

jarnoldft- I can see why you support people who chose the short cut of life to make a living. You obvioulsy don't understand our culture. No one judging other culture. We have a responsibility to live up to what our ancetors teaching us and relay the message to our younger generation. If you chose to screw up your life, it's your business. That's just not how we are.

Though you statement was valid and I understand where you're coming from, think about this. Society itself is very controversial . Whether you're African American, Hispanic, Caucasian, Asian, Indian, etc. if someone does something juicy enough to exploit, it will be exploited. If its then categorized by race, then its done by that very race (I'm sorry to say it) crying about it. I know Vietnamese people dont have much of a spotlight but just because ONE Vietnamese person looks bad doesn't mean the entire Vietnamese population looks bad. I mean, are all Jews cheap? Are all Hispanics mechanics and maids? Are all African Americans felons? Are all Caucasians full of themselves? Do all Asians speak in third party when referring to themselves and own Chinese restaurants? No they don't. So don't sweat the small stuff. Though sometimes our own race can do things that embarrass the rest of us, somewhere down the line, someone/something else would have done the job sooner or later. Thats just how society is, it sucks but thats how it is. If that made you upset, imagine how the Latino and African American lawyers, doctors, politicians, news reporters feel when they have to pick of that news paper and see their own race murdering, raping and robbing others. Believe it or not, there are other races out there that look alot worse due to real life issues. Be glad that so far, its only Tila and a reality show making (in your words) Vietnamese people look bad. But honestly the only person that looks bad, is Tila herself.

too bad. wut kind of a bad lifestyle is she li9ving? ok, shes a model. BIG F***IN WHOOP. i bet ur just saying ur embarrased cuz shes bi. thats f***ed up and crazy. go make fun of someone else, homophob

She's a whore, they come in all races.

For those who DON'T understand Vietnamese culture, you have no room to speak. This is certainly an embarrassment for all of us. I don't give a crap anyone on reality show. Vietnamese community is a whole. If one of us does something to smear our people. the whole community feel responsible and hurt. Unlike others, we DO care about our children. That makes us difference than the rest because we're one.

I would disown my child if she does the same. We were taught better. We definitely don't want to embarrass our grandparents, parents, siblings, cousins and our community. We want them to walk with their head up high. We don't care how others make a living. It's not what we are about.

I don't care Jamie Lynn is pregnant or Lindsay Lohan ran into a tree. I don't make judgment about them. However, I do care how young Vietnamese girls carry themselves because they were taught differently. Tila Tequila wasn't born in Vietnam nor she ever set foot in Vietnam. She grew up here in the states without proper guiding. Most Vietnamese I know work hard and do the right thing not just for themselves but for their family. I know that for a fact because I was born and raised in a very conservative Vietnamese family. I certainly will never do anything to hurt my parents. They sacrificed too much for us to hurt them. You have to be one of us to understand. It may be ok for others but certainly it's not ok for us.

way to be judgemental you know there are plenty of people in every race that do things to disgrace or embarrass us but to judge someone and say that they disgrace your race or heritiage. What about her is so disgraceful. She is a human trying to figure out who she is and what she wants from life. She has made herself famous and made herself a name that will support her through life. It bothers me that people will be judgemental in something that they have no idea about!

There are many people in the US with different race, sex,age whatever it is you don't need to judge her. Who cares if she is bisexual, it doesn't affect your life dose it? i don't think so. i think you should mind your own business and leave her out of your life and let her and her family be concerned with her and her actions.

I'm embarassed for YOU. You say that she is degrading but you need to check yourself. You think its wrong for Vietnamese people to be bi, model, & act? But whats wrong is that you are judging a beautiful person that you don't even know, and you will never have the pleasure of meeting.

Tila Tequila doesn't give anyone a bad name, she is successful, beautiful, and talented. If anything she is making Vietnamese people more recognized.

Trer - How can you she isn't a good representaion of an Asian American? Obviously she is more successful than you. And most likely better looking! HA! Also, Hollywood doesn't stop calling when you "lose your looks." You couldn't be more wrong!

Basmusiq - "I just don't understand how she got so popular, she is so ugly, trashy, and just disgusting" ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!? She is one of the most beautiful people I have ever seen! She is a woman who is secure with herself. It seems like you are putting your insecurities about yourself onto other people, you must be "ugly, trashy, and just disgusting."

HmMm. - She is comfortable with her body and likes to show it off. What's the big deal?? If you got it, flaunt it!! Oh and thanks for the link to tht blog. It rocked.

John J. - Are you just trying to get more points to "level up." Seems like you don't have a real opinion.

heartbreaker6713 - Soooo true!! Nicely Said! Props to you!

RolTid - There are plenty of bad examples out there. Tila isn't one of them tho. Look at all the other people that you listed and compare them to Tila. She is a SAINT compared to them.

PETEPUMA - Not to be mean, but ur fat and ugly. OH, But definatly not to be mean...

Stinkbug B - She was raised to a gated Buddist community until she was 8. So that doesn't say much... she was 8 when they left. Also seems to me tht she would have to be "street wise" to be in a cholo gang, oh and then to move to Queens at the age of 16... Not many 16 yr olds could do that. She is truly brave, strong, and "street wise."

cuttie_pie2480 - You are another one that I admire. Why does it matter if she is Bi?? You are right, it doesn't affect anyones life but her own!

SK - You rock!

mr_cj_jr - Everyone acts there own way, they shouldn't be put into stereotypes because of their ethnic group. Anyone can be on welfare, anyone can be Bi, anyone can be straight... EVERY SINGLE PERSON IS THEIR VERY OWN PERSON.

Amanda couldn't have said it better, here's an exerpt from her blog:

"If I could have one wish concerning my sexuality, it would be for people to focus their energy elsewhere. I don't need everybody to approve of me, but there are so many more important issues to be concerned with (theft, poverty, animal cruelty, global warming, cancer, hate crimes) need I go on? It almost seems a little obsessive and sick that our country puts so much focus on the gay community. There is more perversion, and sin among the straight community (adultery, sexual abuse, statutory rape, disease, etc.) than there has ever has been in ours. We are upstanding, contributing members of society: with children, parents, and siblings. I know who I am, and there is no way that the universe would grant me such an amazing life partner if how we live is wrong. I have been lucky enough to have a beautiful healthy life, and had I not found my perfect mate I wouldn't be who I am today."

The world needs to quit judging people and focus on much bigger things!

And exactly what makes Vietnamese people sooooo much better than others? Absolutely nothing. You are rude and judgemental and need think before you speak.
