What's up with the writer's strike? Any opinions out there?!

Question: It's not even the writers who are striking...it's the guild they belong to. I think it is just greed!

Most jobs just pay for a particular work one time, or sometimes based on profit, but they are asking for money just for playing it. And they are not even talking anymore! Just stupid greed! I think Hollywood should just get rid of anyone who complains and hire new writers. Sure some may not be as good, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who would welcome the thousands these people are saying is not enough!

I mean, even for online viewing, they are offering $250 per year per episode! That means that for less than a weeks work, they can get $250. I know many people paid less and living comfortably. I mean, I can understand if they want twice as much, but they aren't even negotiating anymore. I'm sick of the greed!

The writers are the guild and you cannot write for hollywood without belonging to the guild. Just like as an actor, you cannot act without belonging to the screen actors guild. It's all unionized.

For what it's worth, I support the writers because they are the ones creating the stories we watch. They are the MOST important part of television and movies and they get crap for pay. Seriously. Do you know how much money gets sent the writer's way when you buy a $20 movie? 4 cents. That's all. All they want is 4 more cents per movie. Is that being greedy? I didn't think so.

As for online. Guess how much they get paid currently each time someone views THEIR creative work? Nothing, Nada, Zip. The studios are making bank off of advertising on their online shows and not giving a dime to those that actually created it. So is it greed to ask for some compensation for the hard work YOU did, while the company is earning tons of money for it? I don't think so.

Musical artists get paid every time their song plays on the radio, every time you download it from a legit website. Why should it be different for writers? Just because they are behind the scenes doesn't make them less important.

Also, as for tv. Do you ever watch who writes each episode? Maybe you should, because then you would see that the writer changes from episode to episode. So in actuality they only write maybe 5-6 episodes per 22 episode season.

So am I tired of the greed. Yes, very much. I am tired of the Studios greed. They need to pay the writers their fair share!

I Support the WGA!

For more information as to what the writers actually want I point you to this video: http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ55Ir2jCx...

idk but.....there's no new episodes of the office coming out so im pissed!

I agree that many people would love the money that they make and for something like writing a TV show (which doesn't really benefit society in any way, besides to entertain us). On the other hand, the actors in the show get paid crazy amounts of money, so I think the writers deserve more as well, since the actors wouldn't have anything to say if it wasn't for them! either way, I just want the writer's strike to end so Lost comes back on in Feb as scheduled :)

i agree totally with you, what they are doing is selfish and we are sick of all the reruns!!!!!!

Yes it's greed and I think this strike is a good wake up call for the public. Who needs these sorry excuses for entertainment from these greedy jerks? There's better things to do and I believe the public should demand better quality entertainment!

They deserve the money. Why should the actors only profit from the airing and re airing of episodes? More power to them.

I am not 100% sure what the writers want. My comment isn't on what they deserve or don't deserve, but what about all the other people out of work because of the writers strike?? They make a lot less than the writers, a lot of them probably just make enough to get by, now that they are out of work who is paying their bills, supporting their children?? Does the writers guild ever think of that? Hmmm!

But how much does the studio get?

I think it is also control over the commodity as well, as i should get some say in how it is broadcasted

well if they can afford be be off work for this long they are making way too much money

Writers should be paid once. Do the costumers and craft service people and everyone else involved in a program get paid royalties? I don't think so.

TV writers live a good life. They should appreciate what they've got.

While most jobs pay per hour, or are salaried, that's not true of creative jobs in general. If you write a novel, you get paid an advance against royalties and then get paid per sale. If you are an actor, you get paid a certain salary but also get a cut of the profits off of reruns (in the case of TV) and DVD sales. If you write a song, you get paid when people buy it. This is the way that good creative workers are rewarded - you get paid more if your work is popular and therefore better (at least in theory). There's no reason people who write for the entertainment industry should be any different.

Also, keep in mind that writers aren't salaried. They are paid based upon what they write. A person can write one screenplay and only one, and have to live off the residuals and their job waiting tables for the next decade or so. They can write two or three episodes of a TV series, and nothing more. Almost half of the members of the WGA are unemployed, and their median annual income is $5,000.00 per year (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/greg-saund... ), which doesn't exactly make them rolling in money. Like actors, writers work piecemeal, and can go for years without a gig.

The greed here is on the part of the studios. Writers are the heart of Hollywood. It doesn't matter if you have great actors, a great director, and a huge budget, the script is the soul of any production. Nothing can make up for bad writing, and when you combine good writing with good acting and directing talent, you have something amazing. The studios have been paying writers the same amount for 20 years now - what other industry would put up with that? I bet the people who work for the studios have gotten plenty of raises over the past two decades. It's time to give the writers their due.
