I got some info for you from Wikipedia.

And it goes like this:-

"The future

On February 20, 2007, Variety Magazine revealed that Marc Cherry and the ABC Studios had signed "an eight-figure overall pact", ensuring Cherry's commitment to the show until May 2011, the end of the series' projected seventh season. In addition, the studio has negotiated deals with "all key members of the cast" to stay on the show until then. While Cherry said that he would like the show to come to an end at that point, ABC Studio's Mark Pedowitz stated that "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it". However, whether or not a television series will stay on air is a matter for the network, not the production companies, to decide. Following American standard procedure, this is a decision being made at the end of each season.

Following the success of musical episodes on television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Cherry has expressed an interest in writing a musical episode of Desperate Housewives.

Hiatus
According to Digital Spy, Desperate Housewives has been affected by the WGA strike. The first 9 episodes have already been shot and should stop airing December 2, 2007, but the cast and crew have suspended filming the week of November 9 due to the writers' strikes. On November 30, 2007 the fourth season's fate was announced. The December 2 episode would be the last until the writers' strike is resolved. Part 1 of a two-part episode will be a "cliffhanger" until the writers' strike is resolved and production begins again. ABC is looking to have part 2 be a mid-season premiere once additional episodes are film. Marc Cherry calls this his cruelest act to date."

All good things have to come to an end on sad day.

Hopefully that is just a rumor. Love that show and have
seen every episode since the very first one. There is
going to be a Tornado on the show tomorrow night.
A tornado in California.......okayyyyyyyy????????
I just can't see that show ending anytime soon, it's
so well written......always full of surprises! I would
feel sad if it ended,

Ending for the season, probably earlier than planed like a lot of shows. There are a lot of shows that are just shutting down and how to return in the fall and are hoping to ride out the strike and be able to take up where they left off. I say good luck go to them and I hope it works for those people takeing a big chance.
AS far as this being the last season of Desperate Housewives, it certainly wasn't supposed to be, and I don't think they are planning on making it so.. When they hired Dana Delany she was hired for a 4 year contract,so does that sound like a show about to pull the plug. There were a lot of other things done that showed they had their all behind the show.Don't count theshow over yet.
