What is the big deal with Dancing With the Stars?!

Question: I've watched it a few times, and I don't understand what the fuss is all about. It's nothing but a glorified a dance contest, big deal!

I'm with you on this one.

It's become a popularity contest too. I used to watch it because I love dancing. When it started, my husband and I were taking lessons (before we married), so it was educational for us as well. I watched a little bit last night and just find it annoying. It is a typical popular show, very little substance.

I loved it in the beginning when it was actually about who was the best dancer. Now its a huge popularity contest, much like American Idol. I can't really watch either show anymore. What a disappointment.

I enjoy watching it with my children. Its one show I dont have to shoo them out of the room for.

I just like to watch dancing - ballroom especially, as it's not that popular in Canada. Yes, it is a dance contest, you dont have to watch it.

Things I question are:
- why aren't we told how many total viewers' votes each couple get each week?
- why dont they have two different shows: one show judged by dance judges - their decisions final; and one show judged by the viewing audience? (i.e. one based on talent, one on popularity).

Of course, we know the answer: the phone calls from the viewers bring in thousands if not millions of dollars in income.

It's interesting to read elsewhere that some people thought Mel should not win as she has dancing background; why, then, are celebrities with dancing background even invited to participate?

Next year, let's watch perhaps a plumber, nurse, construction worker, with no previous experience, all being taught how to dance: that would create a level playing field - or dance floor I should say.

It is okay.

To each his own. If you enjoy dancing and watching various celebrities, then this is your show. If not, there are plenty of other shows for you to watch..But DWTS to some of us is enjoyable watching week to week how much the stars improve and what they go through learning each dance and the routine. So if DWTS doesn't tickle your fancy, then find something else to fuss about with people.
