i have watched the show since it first aired, and honestly, i don't think they've ever said EXACTLY what happened. my theoryas that they were partners (in a couple different ways) but she knew that he still loved his late wife and hadn't gotten over the loss of she and his daughter, so jenny decided to move on with her career.
but again, that is just supposition
