Look at the wealthiest celebrities. Going back to Merv Griffin, daytime talk show hosts, as well as night time host (Johny Carson, Jay Leno etc.) all are extremely wealthy because of the advertising $$$$ they can command.
Talk show hosts develop very loyal audiences, and they will support the shows advertisers very closely and advertisers know this. Also shows like Oprah's have very precise demographics which have companies that fit those demographics climbing over each other to get their product in front of them. Look at the clout she exercises with her book reviews. All she has to do is mention the book on her show, and it shoots up to the best seller list. When she gives her audience members a Buick, how many viewers do you think bought a Buick because of what she did. (You'd be surprised!) The same holds true to her endorsed advertisements. (Paul Harvey is another one who has made a large fortune on his clout) This is because her audience trusts her and her endorsements.
This goes for radio as well as TV. Rush Limbaugh is extremely wealth for the exact same reason. People buy what is advertised on these shows, pure and simple!
Her career before her show is what got her the opportunity for the show slot. The magazine, books and other activities are all a result of the success of her show. Her success is due to the fact that she is very good at what she does and brilliant in her choices. She surrounded herself with the people who could help her, and has been very good with her investments, but it still boils down to the fact that she has developed a very loyal audience who supports her advertisers.
One has to consider Oprah's audience, and their collective intelligence. Why are you watching everyday?
She does more than just do a talk show. She has her own magazines, cd's, she has been in movies, has put her own production of "The Color Purple" on Broadway. She is an author, she was a news anchor for over 20 years, and I am sure she invests her money wisely. That lady busts her butt for every penny she has, she used to be so poor when she was little, she had to go to the bathroom outside. She has millions of fans that buy her magazines, cd's, and go to her movies. She is intelligent on top of all of her accomplishments. That is how.
Its not all about her show ..She has many differnet things going . Her magazines , her schools and so much more
lets not forget about her production company also. that has to be a cash cow.
She runs her own company and oversee's her own money and doesn't let anyone else do it for her. She doesn't have a manager who can take the money and run so she's a smart lady and does it all herself.
