Is it illegal to download TV Shows?!

Question: I mean, I know it's illegal to download Movies, Music, Games, etc., but what about TV Shows? Like, if you like to watch a show on Monday night (Heroes), but for some reason miss it, (I can't think of a good explantion for missing it though), but let's say you do. Would it be illegal to download the episode? I know you can just go to NBC and watch it, but could you download it also?

I mean with TIVO, anyone can record it, and then transfer it to their computer (as I understand), and then save all the episodes on their computer anyway, so why would downloading it be any different then doing that. Besides the fact you don't have to pay to download, whereas you have to pay to be able to transfer things from your TIVO to your Computer. I have TIVO, but I haven't used the feature of transferring to my computer, just heard of it, so don't know if it's correct or not.

But anyway, is it illegal?

Thanks for the help,
Matt

TIVO is legal because you are paying for the TV service when you record it. You cannot distribute it afterwards because technically television is for your private viewing, so putting episodes on DVD or your computer is perfectly fine.

The recording industry actually tried to outlaw blank tapes back in the 1980s and failed miserably, so this is an extension of that same law that allows legal copying.

TV Shows revenue usually comes from advertising. If you're downloading TV Shows w/o commercials or taking out the commercials, then that's most likely illegal.
