The gist of it is: They ended up using the shock therapy on her because she could not change who she was. It basically made her a zombie. The nurse (who had quit that night because of what they were doing to these girls) gave the young boy, who was her friend ,the keys to the place to get her out of there. He felt so bad about not holding up for her before and wanted to help her now. By the time he got to her it was too late. When he got to her room they (mental institution) had her dressed in the red dress and hair done up and makeup on but she had been brain damaged. She barely was able to tell him she wanted to be free (like when they went to his special place by the water). He held a pillow over her face and then it showed them arresting him. In the end he helped her in the only way he could at that point. Was a lovely, but sad, show.
He also admitted that he loved Sam, kissed her and then he put the pillow over her face
