Question: In an interview earlier this year David Tennant said he knew exactly how long he wanted to play the Doctor for and hinted that he would like to be the Doctor for as long as Jon Pertwee. So that would be five years altogether.
The BBC has confirmed that he will play the Doctor in the 3 specials set for 2009 to fill the gap until the 5th series in 2010, and Jane Tranter (BBC controller of Drama) has strongly hinted the Tennant will play the Doctor in series 5.
By the end of series 5 Tennant will have played the Doctor for 5 years, but will only have been in four full series. So it depends on whether 5 years is enough for him, or whether he wants to be in 5 full series.
In any case, don't expect to see the 11th Doctor until at least the final scene of the series 5 finale in 2010, and possibly even the end of series 6.
