It's called a laugh track, and they put it in so that the viewer might be motivated to laugh at otherwise unfunny jokes. It isn't supposed to be funny; it's a mind game that television plays with people, and what's sad is that it works a lot of times.

It's called "canned laughter" and it's really annoying....
Some shows use live audiences. others use a laugh track which is annoying. In the early days of TV they would simulate a live audience with this laugh track. yes they still use it. When the producer thinks something is funny.
Its called "canned laughter" the producers put it in where all the supposed "funny" parts in a sitcom or a show are.
Sometimes there not funny but it makes you feel normal if your laughing and you hear it.

Studies show that you're more likely to find something funny if other people are already laughing at it, so they use recorded laughter (and real laughter) after all the jokes.
Some shows, mainly comedy's the half hour ones, are taped before an audience, But the shows sweeten the audience with taped laughter,when they want a big responce
Its annoying. But they do it to make it look good, otherwise it will look like a drama called "Days of our Lifes".
