The character of Horatio is the most trite, smug, contrived character with the corniest lines. The character has actually put me off watching any CSI episodes. I wouldn't have thought it practical to wear a suit to crime scenes since fibre transfer/contamination would be possible. Don't believe what you see on TV.
To interview people maybe but on the scene of a crime investigators usually wear white overalls like this:

This picture was taken in the UK but the same "uniform" is worn here in Montreal and I've seen picture of American investigators dressed like that too.
