Nothing much I can add to what's already been said, except for this, Thomas Gibson's character, Aaron Hotchner, has always been in charge. It just wasn't as obvious when Jason Gideon was profiling the unsubs.

As for Mr. Patankin's reason for leaving, I miss him, as he was the reason I started watching. But, how many of us have gotten tired of a job and at least WISHED we could quit? It doesn't make us mentally ill ;) it makes us - and him - human. Some of us just don't have the "cushion" to make that leap. I wish him luck!

idk never heard of that show

Gideon isn't coming back, ever. Patinkin quit but didn't state his reason for quitting. Too bad, he was good.

Gideon was writing a letter as if he was going to commit suicide. It turned out he just took off, he didn't kill himself. He handed in his gun and badge and left to the open road....
Yeah, and that new guy took his place.

he could'nt do it any more, so he quit the fbi.

hey got really stressed and left a note saying he was going to go find his place somewhere else and just left. When the tall personality guy went to find him he had already left

If I remember right, he simply wanted out of the show. He thinks he's some kind of big time actor and the show was beneath him. In my opinion, Joe Mantegna has done a much better job of Many's always scowling hung over look.

IDK, go to wikipedia and type in criminal minds.

Mandy Patinkin is a bit of a nut-job... some of my friends suspect he's bi-polar... at any rate, he decided that he didn't want to do the show any longer and walked away. (He did the same thing with another show he was on, "Chicago Hope")

The character, Gideon, was shown getting stressed out over a case he nearly blew where he started to really doubt his profiling ability... there was some implication that he was going to kill himself - but the audience was left with him simply wandering off (not dead).

There was a shift in the cast's roles... the other FBI fella (what's his name - the guy who used to be on "Dharma & Greg") became team leader. Joe Mantegna was introduced as a retired chief profiler who became rich & famous writing books who suddenly felt the urge to come back and help again.
