U.S. Football in 'The Simspons'?!

Question: In the episode with Hank Scorpio from season 8, Homer expresses his lifelong dream is to own the Dallas Cowboys. In the end he ends up being disappointed getting the Denver Broncos.
But I don't understand the joke. I'm English so don't know an awful lot about football, but aren't these both pretty good teams?

LOL, I've always wondered this myself.

Nick B is right--the Cowboys were better and more popular than the Broncos at the time, but I don't think that tells the whole story.

That episode originally aired on November 3rd, 1996. The Broncos were 13-3 that year, but this episode was most likely made before the season started. In the 4 years prior to 1996 the Broncos were 32-32. So they definitely weren't as good as the Cowboys at the time, but there were a lot of teams that were worse.

So why did they use the Broncos instead of some lesser team? I really don't know. Perhaps Matt Groening is a Raider or Chief fan, and therefore hates the Broncos. Or maybe they tried to use other teams first but couldn't get permission from the teams themselves. But these are just guesses.

The real question is, have you ever heard anyone say goodbye to a shoe?

its funny because he gets the "broncos" when he wants the "cowboys" hehehehhe get it now silly

Denver was not near as good at the time and Dallas has always been known as America's team. Dallas was winning lots of Super Bowls at the time this episode came out. John Elway was basically all Denver had during this period.

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most popular teams ever. Some writer even gave them the nickname "America's Team" (although that title is just propoganda). The Cowboys are something more than just a good team; they have a long and successful history, and they started the whole hot cheerleader thing.

The Broncos at the time were a fairly good team, but nowhere close to the prestige the Cowboys had earned.

The joke is that both are NFL teams, and I don't know about you, but if I ever got an entire NFL team for free, I would be pretty happy. I mean, its a pro football team. The joke isn't really even about the NFL or anything; the joke is Homer's selfish desires. Imagine getting a free car, and complaining that you wanted a blue one instead of a red one. ITS STILL A FREE CAR! That's the joke.
