Do you know why?!

Question: T.V. commercials are so much louder then the show??

Answers: T.V. commercials are so much louder then the show??

And that is just one of a million reasons why Tivo is worth every penny :) I haven't been forced to watched a commercial in over 2 years. If one catches my attention while i'm fast forwarding then I'll watch it... I love that "things you can do with one finger" one, and the new Mercedes one (I own a Mercedes so I'm biased on that one).

WHY WHY WHY should I be subjected to having to watch someone squealing (who thinks they're singing) about their power chair, or watch that ugly chic with the huge nose who thinks she's sexy talk about how the stranger she just picked up in the bar doesn't need viagra cos he has a cream (wow, he's WAY cooler then the viagra guy then isn't he?!) I don't need a chair that can go a whopping 2 miles an hour or a cream for some guys wang. So why should I have to watch it? Why do guys have to watch the tampon commercials? Why do girls have to watch wang enhancment commercials? Why do kids have to watch the prescription commercials? Oh I love those... they either make it so everyone thinks they HAVE to have it... like.... "Do your toenails need to be clipped more than once a month? Do you know that 9 out of 10 of the people who had strokes and heart attacks last year clipped their toenails more than once a month? Don't let it happen to YOU! Tell your doctor to prescribe our useless expensive pill NOW!" or "Do you have trouble falling asleep more than once a year? Does stress keep you awake longer than 5 minutes? You have Normal Sleep Syndrome!!!! Get our happy pills NOW!" Then they list the side effects like prizes that come in the bottle.... "Side effects may include.... Nausea! Vomiting! Amnesia!!!! Swollen tongue!! Purple blotches!!!!! And in rare cases.... STROKE!!!!!! Try one TODAY!!!"

Just leave me alone and let me watch the Simpsons. Ugh. I wish we could rate the commercials with the thumbs up and down buttons on our Tivo Peanuts!!!!!! Or better yet, block the ones we don't like!!!!!

Advertising strategy, i guess....

i know i hate that. I especially hate the loud music in movies when people are talking.

Ask any TV station this question and you’ll get the same answer, “the commercials are no louder than any of the other programming we broadcast — they just sound louder.”

It’s true, the station isn’t turning up the volume when the commercials run, but that’s not the complete answer. Otherwise, you wouldn’t need to reach for the remote to turn down the volume during the commercial break. So what’s really going on here?

Broadcasters are required to have equipment that limits the peak power they can use to send out their audio and video signals. That means the loudest TV commercial will never be any louder than the loudest part of any TV program. A TV program has a mix of audio levels. There are loud parts and soft parts. Nuance is used to build the dramatic effect.

Most advertisers don’t want nuance. They want to grab your attention. To do that, the audio track is electronically processed to make every part of it as loud as possible within legal limits. “Nothing is allowed to be subtle,” says Brian Dooley, Editor-At-Large for CNET.com. “Everything is loud – the voices, the music and the sound effects.”

Spencer Critchley, writing in Digital Audio last month, explained it this way: “The peak levels of commercials are no higher than the peak levels of program content. But the average level is way, way higher, and that’s the level your ears care about. If someone sets off a camera flash every now and then it’s one thing; if they aim a steady spot light into your eyes it’s another, even if the peak brightness is no higher.”

I hate that. But it's so you can still hear it if you leave the room for a moment
