What exactly is the writer's strike in NY for?!

Question: And did they do it on purpose this week, because of November sweeps month?

Answers: And did they do it on purpose this week, because of November sweeps month?

No, they didn't do it because of sweeps month, they did it because their current contracts just happened to expire on Oct 31.

The main issue of the dispute here is getting paid royalties from the revenue generated from new media sources.

In the last contract negotiation, the writers were shut out of getting a cut of the proceeds from sales of DVDs and iTunes of shows they had written.

Now that shows are being broadcast on the web and podcasts as well, there are revenue sources generated from that viewing too, and the writers, in their eyes, have not been given their dues, and the writers want compensation for their material distributed in this way. In their eyes, it's akin to not paying an author any royalties for sales of audio versions of their books, and only paying them for paper copy sales.

The studio's position is that there hasn't yet been enough time to study what the revenue intake would be from such new technology viewing sources, and they want a three year "study period" to assess that. The writers, however, don't want to wait that long. And rightly so...Hollywood is a fickle business and aside from a few very talented and lucky name-makers, it's not uncommon for job turnover to be much shorter than that period.

Selfish people who want want want money money money.

they want for money :[

They want more money$$$

They want a percentage of the revenue from internet sales and DVDs of their work.

You mean someone really gets paid to write those crappy TV movies? Where else will Eric Roberts find work?

People who work hard and deserve more money off of the DVD sales.

unselfish people who want the money that deserve.
They want part of the money that companies get from the sale of dvds (that couldn't have been made without their help).

Strikes are always about $$. They want more money negotiated for DVD sales, etc. The writers make the shows, not the actors. The shows for November have already been written for most shows. If the strike continues, it will affect the end of the season. It has immediated impact on SNL, Tonight Show, etc, who will go to re-runs immediately.

They want piece of what revenue the digital industry is bringing form DVD and other media sales. It appears, they have not been getting any cur from those profits.

they're striking because they say that all the tv shows they've been writting for have become successful and they're not getting what they're properly do in the form of royalties(money). they feel they deserve more. hope this helps, good luck

all the writers went on strike
it has to do with all the royalties they want from dvds and other sources ...it could be a while before they setlles the last one about 20 years ago lasted for 22 weeks...they have been in negotiation for sometime and couldn't come to an agreement so they went on strike

Every three years, the Writers Guilds negotiate a new basic contract with the AMPTP by which its members are employed. In the 2007 negotiations over this contract, an impasse was reached and the WGA membership voted to give its board authorization to call a strike, which it did on Friday, November 2 with the strike beginning the subsequent Monday.
