Richard Hatch made reality tv what it is today. The show was supposed to be people surviving, but he picked four unlikeable people and had them form a secret alliance where they all voted for the same person to slowly weed the rest of the players out before they duked it out in the final four. The rest of the survivors were oblivious about the alliance until it was too late.
Richard and Kelly went against each other in the final two. No one could stand Richard, but they were impressed by his ability to blindside them, and they felt that Kelly was a flake.
At the final tribal council, Susan, in all her crazy glory, made a speech about snakes and rats and the desire to watch Kelly die a slow, painful death.
I guarantee that there would be no Dancing With the Stars, no Bachelor, no American Idol, or very few other reality shows without the genius of Richard Hatch and his alliance.
At the final tribal when the last two contestants (Kelly and Richard) have to plead their case, Sue called Richard a rat and a snake and a lot of bad mouthing went on. That is what I remember from watching it...but that was 7 years ago.
When they were at Tribal it was between Kelly and Richard, Sue got up and said that Richard was a snake and Kelly was the rat and if she saw Kelly dying in the dessert from dehydration she wouldn't get her a drink of water. The proceeded to say that she was going to let nature take it's course and vote that the snake eats the rat (Richard to win)
It was a great episode, it's really to bad you missed it.
Also after Richard won he never paid taxes on the money. I believe he went to jail for a short bit. But not positive about that. I know he got in trouble though.
