I think you're referring to "Mr. Merlin" ca 1982 with Clark Brandon as the dark haired teenager that becomes Merlin's (as Max Merlin the mechanic) assistant.

You can Google "Mr. Merlin" and you will get some hits. There's also a short blurb on imdb.com but nothing substantial. Google is your best bet.

My favorite episode was the one where Clark Brandon tried to get an A in Chemistry by copying Merlin's formula for turning lead to gold. Of course the formula was strange enough for the teacher to try out using one of his lead chess pieces, and of course it succeeds. Merlin talks to the teacher about the secrecy of the formula and why such a formula cannot be given to the world. Realizing the truth, the teacher accedes to Merlin and gives the formula back. Clark also gets an F.

I took Chemistry in college and, by Jove, did I rack my brains in electrochemistry to try to figure out the "lead to gold" formula. There are possibilities, but I won't divulge it here.

I hope I helped.

Cheers.

No i dont

rings a bell somewhere in the back of my mind....

are you sure it wasn't called 'jamie and the magic torch'

I think so. I remember watching a show called Mr Merlin. The boy, Zac, was the magicians apprentice who kept getting things wrong. I remember one episode where he created a double of himself, and Merlin had to delete the 'evil' twin. I remember having a nightmare that he had killed the wrong one! Tried to double check this answer, but not a lot of information. Sad to read that the guy who played Merlin died though. (Barnard Hughes)
