What is the true relationship between Xena and Ares in `Xena:The Warrior princes!

Question: It appears that Xena was Ares' "right-hand woman" for a period of time during her "evil" phase. It is not known exactly when they met, though it is suggested that he gave her her signature weapon, the chakram.

During the timeline of the show, Ares repeatedly tried to seduce Xena back to the dark side and to win her over as his "Warrior Queen" who will rule the world in his name. She repeatedly foiled his plans, but also helped him when he was temporarily mortal. After the birth of Xena's baby, Eve, who was targeted by the Olympian gods as the Bringer of Twilight, Ares declared his love for Xena and offered to protect her child. Xena refused, believing that this was a trick; but at least once she used Ares' help against Athena, promising herself to him but then backing out of the deal. Eventually Ares made good on his offer, sacrificing his godhood to save Xena, Eve, and Xena's friend and soulmate Gabrielle. Later Xena restored Ares to godhood but refused his offer to be a goddess and his consort.

While Xena consistently rejects Ares' attempts to court her, there are indications that she has feelings for him. In the Season 6 episode "Coming Home," after saving the now-mortal Ares from the Furies, Xena gives him a tender kiss. When he says, "Guess I'm finally getting to you," Xena replies, "You always got to me, Ares. But you were bad for me -- you still are." To his question "Is there a chance that we could be together someday?" she replied, "Maybe one in a billion." However, in the episode "You Are There" where Ares is restored to godhood, Xena seems to encourage his continued pursuit (to his "I guess you know I'll never stop trying," she replies, "I'd expect nothing less." When he walks away and disappears, returning to Olympus, she stares at him with a wistful look.

Chris Manheim, X:WP writer and executive producer, referred to Xena and Ares as "star-crossed lovers" who had genuine feelings for each other but could not be together because of circumstances.

Xena and Ares may have been lovers in her days as a warlord. X:WP writer/producer Steven Sears has said that he regarded them as ex-lovers when he wrote episodes with Xena and Ares, but this issue is never resolved in the show's canon.

The Season 3 episode "The Furies" also suggested that Ares may be Xena's true father, but then backed away from that idea.
